DEAR EDITOR,
I read the recent letter about putting profits before people and remembered the late one-time British Prime Minister, Sir Edward Heath’s, apt description of this practice as “the unpleasant and unacceptable face of capitalism”. I can testify to this as the truth.
Briefly, in the early 1970s, when my son was settled at primary school, I took a job in the nearby City of London, the financial centre of London, popularly known as “The City” initially, with a family-owned-and-run merchant bank. Big mistake.
My immediate boss was from the Eastern sub-continent, and justified Kipling’s “East is East, West is West” assertion. He was both unpleasant and unacceptable. I walked off the job within a few months, he was fired shortly afterwards for not telling management the whole truth.
He had demonstrated the philosophy of profits before people, when I complained about not feeling well, with his insensitive response that he was “making money for them” and my health issue was “stupid”! Crude, greedy.
I could never accept the ‘Wall Street culture’ that “greed is good, greed is right, greed works”. No, no, no. Such an outlook encourages man’s inhumanity to man.
