A receptionist was yesterday sentenced to 36 months imprisonment by Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman. The woman appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and pleaded guilty to stealing monies from Midas Enterprise.
Ronella Teshanna Junior pleaded guilty to the charge which alleged that between March 1 and June 16, last, at Charles Street, Charlestown, while being employed as a clerk or servant at Midas Enterprise, she fraudulently embezzled $219,000 taken into her possession on behalf of Midas Enterprise, her employer.
Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves stated that Junior while employed at Midas Enterprises, Giddings Pay Day Pawnshop and Princess Raven Hotel as a receptionist, was entrusted to collect the monies.
The court heard that when the owner made checks in the company’s records it was discovered that monies collected from the period mentioned in the charge was missing.
The prosecutor said that the missing monies raised suspicions and the owner reviewed CCTV footage which showed Junior removing cash from a box.
Giddings told the court that Junior was in the habit of stealing money from his business.
He stated that he had given Junior four chances – moving her from location to location every time he discovered she was stealing from his business.
He added that Junior is in the habit of stealing money from his business to support a man and his five children.
Junior when asked by the magistrate why she took the money stated “I was on probation and the money that I was being paid was not enough. Things hard and I was in a lil’ situation. I would like to get the opportunity to work and pay him back the money.”
The magistrate in return told the court that due to the accused’s early guilty plea and the fact that she did not waste the court’s time she would sentence the woman to 36 months’ imprisonment.
