A Corentyne resident who was one of two persons charged with robbery under arms and felonious wounding has been freed of the charge.
The men, Pertab Arjune, 25, of Belvedere, Corentyne, Berbice and Marlon Ellis, were jointly charged, on Wednesday August 12, 2015 at Rose Hall Town, Corentyne Berbice, with shooting and wounding Cambio dealer, Anil Kumar Sukraj, 25, of David Street, Rose Hall Town.
The men first appeared before Magistrate Marissa Mittleholzer in the Albion Magistrate’s Court. However the Magistrate recused herself from the matter after allegations were made by the victim’s father on national television.
The matter was then switched to the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court presided over by Magistrate Alex Moore.
Pertab (and Ellis) while armed with guns allegedly attempted to murder Anil Kumar Sukraj, 25, of David Street, Rose Hall Town. He was also charged with on the same day, time and location, shooting and robbing Sukraj of US$3,000US and $150,000 Guyana Currency.
During the trial attorney at law Mursalene Bacchus, who appeared for Pertab, contended that there were no evidence put forward by the prosecution to implicate his client. Bacchus in his submission contended that both the VC and his father testified and neither implicated his client in the robbery. The witnesses in their statements to the police also did not implicate his client in the crime.
He thus submitted that the matter against his client be dismissed.
The Magistrate concurred with the submissions by Mr. Bacchus and freed the accused. However the matter against Ellis is continuing.
On the day in question Sukraj, called “Fat Man”, was sitting on a stand on the corner of the public road with a wad of money in his hand soliciting business when two men came up to him. The men demanded his money before shooting him. Sukraj fell and the bandits grabbed what they could before escaping.
The injured Sukraj was picked up and rushed to the Anamayah Memorial Hospital where he was admitted for emergency treatment.
He was reportedly shot in the left forearm, the bullet reportedly exiting and re-entering the right side chest.
The police subsequently swooped down on a house at Belvedere and arrested the suspect.
He was subsequently charged. Ellis was also arrested and charged.
