Vedanand Chander, 37, of No.71 village, Corentyne Berbice is on trial for attempted murder before Justice Jo Ann Barlow and a mixed Jury in the Berbice High Court.
The man is accused of attempting to kill Chabbidat Tejram, 35, also of No 71Village on October 16, 2012. The incident occurred following a ‘name calling incident’, at No. 71 Village, Corentyne.
State Prosecutor Stacy Gooding is presenting the State’s case. Attorneys at law Mursalene Bacchus and Perry Gossai are representing the defendant.
The prosecution has so far called a number of witnesses.
According to the State’s case, Tejram was tiling a bench at the front of his yard at No.71 village when the accused, who was riding a bicycle, said something to him. He responded. The man reportedly returned with a chisel, which he used to injure Tejram.
Testifying, Latchmanarine Ramsundar a Neighbourhood police stated that on the day in question he was patrolling in the No. 71 area when he saw a crowd.
He made inquiries and observed Tejram grabbing his armpit with a cloth. The accused was nearby with a chisel in his hand. He said that he collected the chisel and handed them over to the police. Both men were taken to the Springlands Police Station.
Dr. Ryan Campbell in his testimony stated that he examined Tejram at the Springlands Hospital. During his examination he saw a stab wound on the victim measuring about four centimeters in the region of his arm pit.
He said under cross examination by Bacchus, that the injury was caused by a sharp pointed instrument. He was also questioned by the jury.
Police Officer Troy Munroe uplifted the medical certificate which he tendered into evidence.
Police Detective Corporal Terry Cummings in his testimony stated that he arrested the accused at the Springlands Police Station when he put the allegation to him that he tried to murder Chabbidat Tejram. The man responded by saying that “Officer, I don’t know wah going”. He was arrested and placed in custody.
Chabbidat Tejram, the virtual complainant was also at the station, where he had gone to make a report. He was subsequently taken to the Skeldon Hospital and was later transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.
He said under cross examination he got instructions from his superiors to charge the accused.
Tajeram in his evidence stated that around 18:00 hrs on the day in question he was tiling a bench at the front of his yard when the accused, who was riding bicycle, passed by and called him a deportee. The accused told him he would be back. He subsequently returned. He was not paying him much attention, but saw him coming with something in his hand. He said that the man used that object to bore him. He subsequently realized it was a chisel. After he was stabbed he fell to the ground.
Questioned by Bacchus, Tejram denied calling the accused “a waste man”, but maintained that the accused called him a “Deportee”. He also denied pelting the accused with a concrete brick, or attacking him at any time.
The prosecution has closed its case.
The matter is continuing.
