– only half of $1.8B collected
Contrary to a declaration by the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) three weeks ago that it had recovered some 1.8 billion dollars via arrears (debt) collection, it has been revealed that the actual figure recovered is $921,814,791 – half of that originally reported amount.
This revelation comes on the heels of twice-convicted Lear Goring being fired as the Debt Collection Manager.
During a press conference on August 10, Chief Executive of GWI, Dr Richard Van-West Charles had disclosed that the utility company recovered some 1.8 Billion from outstanding debts since the change of its administration 11 months ago.
The CE had announced that GWI embarked on debt collection through “an intensive programme of disconnection”. He noted that the disconnection of defaulters coupled with the “discovery of people who are getting water by nefarious means” had largely contributed to the recovery of the billion-dollar sum.
In a release to the media, the Public Relations Department of GWI said that they wished to “correct information shared to the media as it relates to its arrears collection figure for the period October 2015 to July 2016. During a press conference on August 10, 2016, it was reported that GWI raked in $1.8 Billion in arrears for the period ending July 2016.”
The release revealed that after “checks and verification, it was found that the arrears collection figure up to July 2016 is $921,814,791.00”
The company further apologised for the incorrect figure that was reported and continued that it remains “committed to ensuring continued transparency, even as it continues to go after defaulters.”
