Sookranie Dass watched yesterday as police escorted businessman Amarnauth Bhopaul and the alleged hitman Nanda Kumar Ganesh into the Mahaica Magistrate’s Court to face charges for the murder of her son, Jadesh Dass, four years ago.
Wearing shackles, Bhopaul, 47, of Lot ‘A’ Section ‘B’ Chelsea Park, Mahaica, and Ganesh, 30, a mechanic of Albouystown, appeared before Magistrate Alicia George, who remanded them to prison until July 28.
Bhopaul was represented by Attorney-at-Law Sandil Kissoon, while Ganesh was unrepresented.
Apart from his mother, several relatives of the slain trucker were present at the court.
The two men are accused of murdering Jadesh Dass, a 31-year-old truck driver of Chelsea Park, Mahaica, on April 17, 2012. Dass, who was employed by one of Bhopaul’s brothers, was shot in the head and dumped on a parapet at New Road, Mahaica.
Police have received reports that Dass was slain because of an affair that he was having with a sister-in-law of Amarnauth Bhopaul. Police allege that Bhopaul paid Ganesh $500,000 to kill Dass.
Police had also detained, but later released, other members of the Bhopaul household, as well as Nanda Kumar Ganesh’s sister.
