A Rose Hall Town resident who severed his wife’s head during a dispute following a drinking spree has
been charged with the murder.
The man, Desmond August Gordon, called ‘Tall Man’, 50, of Lot 196 Mangru Street, Rose Hall Town, Corentyne and a cane cutter at the Albion Estate, Corentyne, Berbice, is charged with murdering his reputed wife Bhagmattie Angad, called “Bhagmattie Etwaroo”, “Kamini”, and “Kamani Etwaroo”, 50.
The woman was a housewife. Gordon killed her on May 9 at the Rose Hall Town home.
He appeared on Friday before Magistrate Marissa Mittelholzer at the Albion Magistrate’s court and was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
The couple who had been together for about eight years allegedly shared a very abusive relationship. They were imbibing alcohol on the day the incident occurred.
According to residents in the area, around 17:00 hrs on the day in question they heard loud screams coming from the house.
It was reported that moments before the incident occurred, the man had dealt the woman several lashes about her body.
The woman subsequently ran out of the house and the accused ran after her.
About five minutes later, the accused was seen with blood all over his body and reportedly stated that he had just killed the woman and was going to kill himself.
The police were contacted and arrived on the scene and arrested the accused who was still in the area.
The woman was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Gordon who was unrepresented was remanded to jail until June 3. Sergeant Orin Joseph is presenting the state’s case.
