More support is likely to be forthcoming to local children in the area of medical conditions. This is based on discussions between The Three Rivers Kids Foundation, a Canada-based Charitable Organisation, and the Ministry of Public Health. The organisation is looking to increase the amount of support it offers to Guyanese children.
President and Founder of the Foundation, Ms. Jeanette Singh, along with the Office Manager of the Guyana Office, Ms. Lita Gayadin, on Thursday met with Public Health Minister, Dr. George Norton, for the first time to discuss the ways in which the organisation can collaborate with the Ministry.
The Foundation is one which is dedicated to helping sick children in Guyana whose parents are too poor to afford medical care. They pay for the medical treatment for children who need to be taken overseas.
Singh, a registered nurse, expressed particular interest in assisting visually impaired children in Guyana, as well as those with Nephrotic Syndrome.
The organisation, which has been registered as a Non Governmental Organization in Guyana since February 2008, has to date assisted approximately 150 children with medical conditions such as brain tumors and congenital heart conditions.
The founder indicated that currently, the organisation only sends children to be treated in India, due to the quality and cost of health care there.
However, the group is hoping to change this state of affairs and seek needed medical care right here. And the organisation has shared its willingness to finance the treatment of children right here once the facilities and expertise are available.
This notion was welcomed by Minister Norton, who expressed gratitude to the organisation for the work it has been doing in Guyana. He assured them of his full support as they endeavor to help sick children to receive the medical treatment they need.
The Three Rivers Kids Foundation will be sending four Guyanese children to India for much needed surgery in April of this year.
Guyana has been getting support from the International Children’s Heart Foundation also known as the Baby Heart Foundation to care for children with various heart defects.
With the support from the United States Foundation, children with congenital heart conditions are afforded an improved delivery of service including surgery and aftercare.
