– Suspected electrocuted
Investigations are ongoing into the death of a 22-year-old man whose body was found in the house where he
lives alone along the Palmyra Public Road, East Coast Berbice. It is suspected that he was electrocuted, because he had a bulb and socket in his hands. This was even as he was preparing to attend church.
According to relatives, the man, Ian Andrews, worked at the Guyana Beverage Company also in Palmyra. He was originally from Sans Souci, Wakenaam, but moved to Berbice along with his only other sibling Vivian some six years ago.
According to his uncle, Clyde Mayers, his nephews came to Berbice after finishing school in order to find employment, because jobs were not available in Essequibo.
Ian was employed at the Busta Company as a clerk for over a year while his brother is employed with Demerara Distillers Limited.
The two brothers, who, along with other family members are staunch Jehovah’s Witnesses, used to live together at different places before settling in the house where Ian was found. Vivian had subsequently married and moved to another location.
Information revealed that Ian was a good worker and worked until 14:30 hrs on Thursday before he left to go home to return. But he never did. According to his aunt, Melvina Mayers, she made the discovery. The woman stated that she was at home around 08:00 hrs when she received a call to go and check if all was well with Ian.
The woman said that she was told that Ian’s mother and his workplace were trying to make contact with him, but were unsuccessful. She was asked to go and check. The aunt said that she went to the man’s residence, not too far away. The woman said that after calling for some time she decided to return home.
She then returned with a member of the church and decided to call again. After not getting any answer they decided to take a walk around the house. She saw the back door open and thought that he had gone to use the outside toilet.
However upon venturing upstairs she was shocked by what she saw, her nephew (Ian) was lying on the kitchen floor with a bulb and socket in his hands. The young man was all dressed for church in his tie with his bible and other literature nearby.
It is understood that a light in the house was giving problems and Ian may have attempted to fix it before leaving for church and was electrocuted.
It was stated that the house has a series of electrical problems and constant complaints to the landlord did not bear any results.
Ian Andrews was described by relatives as simple and hard working.
