With the final stanza of the preliminary phase of the inaugural GT Beer / Petra Organisation Futsal Competition scheduled to be played this evening, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, teams aiming to advance to the next stage will no doubt be seeking to make emphatic statements to would be contenders.
In the opening encounter, West Back Road takes on BV and that will be followed by the clash between Sophia and Broad Street. The third game will feature West Front Road and West Demerara’s Showstoppers and in the final game of the night, Bent Street square off against North Ruimveldt.
West Back Road will rest their hopes on the performances of Jason Tyrell, Eron Hayde, Odel Young, Jamal Haynes and Phillip Rowley, all of whom has shown good form of late, while BV’s pursuit of victory will depend on the likes of Delroy Deen, Warren Gilkes and Devon Griffith.
In the encounter to follow, Sophia should have an easy time against Broad Street that has not been able to replicate the kind of class that made them so formidable a few years ago. The East Georgetown-based Sophia unit has proven time and again that they are a team made up of players that like to score plenty goals.
Sheik and Joshua Kamal, Shemroy Arthur, Omallo Williams and Dwayne Lowe are no joke and their individual abilities usually cause headaches for opposing defences and Broad Street’s backline in this tournament has leaked a number of goals even against weaker teams so fans could expect a goal feast from Sophia.
The experienced Jimmy Gravesande, who has looked way below par recently, is anticipated to be at the forefront of their charge for a consolation win along with support from Leon Richardson and Ryan Jones. The real business end starts with the third game between West Front Road and Showstoppers and this encounter could provide breathtaking stuff.
Randolph Wagner, Michael Oie, Michael and Hubert Pedro are all tested and proven players of immense talent and quality, but Showstoppers have shown that they are an improving team and not afraid to mix it up with the more established units in this format.
Once again, Anthony Sancho, Dexroy Adams, Marvin Josiah and Damian Williams are expected to lead their quest for a win and vital points so a close battle is in the making. What more could be said about the night’s feature which brings together Bent Street and North Ruimveldt.
Bent Street will be led by O’Kenie Fraser, Frank Crandon, Colin Nelson, Daniel Wilson and Sheldon Profitt and they will have to play to the best of their abilities to repel a strong North Ruimveldt unit that has in their lineup experienced players such as Gerald Grittens, Orin Massiah, Joshua Browne and Linris Carrington.
It should be a bruising affair and one not to miss. Among the other sponsors are NAMILCO and Trophy Stall of Bourda Market. The winner of the tournament will take home $500,000 and the championship trophy, while second, third and fourth place finishers receive $250,000, $125,000 and $75,000 respectively.
