Floodlights and Mike’s Wellwoman won the male and female categories respectively when the Trevor Wharton softball cricket competition was contested on Sunday last at the Everest Cricket Club.
Floodlights overcame Park Rangers by 15 runs in the final encounter. Batting first, Floodlights posted 160-8 in 20 overs. Man of the match Fizul Ally struck 59, Wayne Jones 42, Nandram Samlall 24 and Greg De Franca 23. Amo Singh and Richard Latiff claimed two wickets each. Park Rangers were bowled out for 145 in 19 overs in reply. Paul Parsram made 32, Dennis Persaud 26, Latiff 19, Colin Greaves 16 and Ramesh Sunich 15. Rahaman Khan snared three wickets, while Dharam Persaud and Ramchand Ragbeer had two apiece.
The female final between Mike’s Wellwoman and Trophy Stall Angels was called off due to bad light, but Wellwoman were crowned champions after finishing with more wins.
In the preliminary round, Mike’s Wellwoman beat Trophy Stall Angels by 59 runs.
Mike’s Wellwoman rattled up a challenging 130-3 off their allocation of 10 overs, taking first knock. Zola Telford led with an attacking 78. In reply, Trophy Stall Angels were 71-8 when their 10 overs expired. Monique Benn and Verne Henry picked up two wickets each.
Wellwoman overcame 4R Lioness by 28 runs. Wellwoman managed 94-7 in 10 overs, batting first with Latoya Smith and Renika Isaacs scoring 31 and 20 respectively; Ruth George took 2-16. 4R Lioness responded with 66-8 in 10 overs. Akaze Thompson struck 20 while Smith had 3-9 and Amanda Bob Semple 2-20.
In other matches, Wellwoman beat Blue Divas while Trophy Stall Angels overcame Blue Divas and 4R Lioness. Telford was given the most valuable player award while Floodlights and Wellwoman received trophies compliments of Trophy Stall Bourda Market.
