Yesterday two persons accused of stealing jewellery made their first appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to a charge of simple larceny.
It is alleged that between June 30 and July 1, Travis Mars and Coleen Boyer, of 58 Friendship Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara, carted off a quantity of jewellery, the property of Annette Phoenix.
The court heard that the two stole 13 gold rings valued $516,000 and 3 gold chains worth $362,000, among other jewellery, all totaling $1.273 M.
The defendants denied the allegations and were released on $75,000 bail each by Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan.
Mars’ Attorney Dexter Todd during his bail application, asked for his clients to be released on reasonable bail. He also stated that Mars is known to the virtual complainant (Phoenix). The attorney explained that his client has been entrusted before to take items to Matthew’s Ridge where Phoenix’s business is located.
Todd contended that Mars had some disagreement on payment on the day in question to which he had voiced his concern. However Todd said that the man continued working for Phoenix.
The attorney said that his clients’ share a relationship and that Mars normally goes alone to transact the woman’s business.
He added that Boyer decided to accompany Mars on the day in question, since she wanted to visit her mom. The Attorney further stated that Phoenix called the police because she thought Mars would have taken her belongings.
The police went in search of the defendant and apprehended him. Todd noted that Mars has been cooperating with the police and the items were returned to Phoenix.
The attorney pointed out that Boyer was never employed by Phoenix; she was just with her partner.
Police Prosecutor, Deniro Jones had no objection to bail. The two accused were ordered to return to court on July 27.
