The long absent National Youth Policy is apparently a top priority for the new Education Ministry. In fact, the issue has been placed so high that a top official opined that the document will be moved from the draft stage within the first 100 days of the new administration.
An updated National Youth Policy was promised to Guyana by former Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, more than five years ago.
During previous forums, Dr. Anthony had indicated that widespread consultations were being conducted to produce a draft for the National Youth Policy.
Now, Minister within the Ministry of Education, Nicolette Henry, has said that much needs to be done with regard to the “top priority” policy.
According to Henry, not much has been left by the previous administration to work with. She said that whatever draft existed, was shared with her and she had the opportunity to review various documents.
“With regard to what we intend to do with the long absence, I don’t think that retrospectively we can do anything with what wasn’t there,” Henry said.
She continued, “What we plan to do moving forward, however, is to ensure that we get it moved from the draft stage into a real policy that has some life and that is being implemented. Also, a policy that has an implementation plan to accompany it.”
This, she suspects, will be done within the first 100 days of the new government. “That is a priority,” she added.
She added that she had spoken with a number of persons working in the new department. Together, they reviewed documents and she is planning on having broad consultations to maximise the input received.
This will allow the “right tweaks”, she said, to finalise a plan that represents broad participation and consultation with stakeholders. She emphasised that these stakeholders must be comfortable with the final document.
