– possible homicide thwarted
His intent, from all indications, was a sinister one. But swift action from crime fighting ranks ensured that the plans of a gun-toting man were thwarted.
The ranks had their work cut out for them as they, in the early hours of yesterday morning, descended on the East Ruimveldt, Georgetown area to respond to a shooting report. There they were able to apprehend the man who reportedly hails from Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara.
He was reportedly armed with a submachine gun.
The man was arrested by police while on a dam at East Ruimveldt after disposing of the firearm.
Reports are that, minutes earlier he was discharging rounds indiscriminately.
This publication was informed that the man’s intended target might have been a woman. It is unclear if the two are involved in a relationship.
However, it is believed that swift action by the ranks ensured that no one was hurt.
They were able to recover the weapon used by the man, along with several spent shells.
The man is currently an inmate of the Brickdam lockups.
Police in a subsequent statement yesterday morning acknowledged, that a man is in custody assisting with investigations into an early morning report of discharging a firearm at Mandela Avenue, Georgetown. Ranks responded around 05:30 hours, the statement said.
It was reported that as police ranks approached, a man who had a firearm was seen running away. He was pursued by the police ranks during which time he threw the firearm into a septic tank.
The man was eventually apprehended and the firearm recovered and found to be a Luger Intratec 9mm sub-machine gun. Police also retrieved eight spent shells, the statement added.
The laudable police action comes at a time when there are reports of increased gun related crimes. The Police Force however, seems keen on reversing this disturbing trend.
