-Sonics edge Nets in OT humdinger
Pepsi Sonics managed to eke out a tense overtime (OT) victory against Republic Bank Nets Sunday at the National Gymnasium as a battle for home court dominance reached climatic proportions with the continuation of the ‘King of the Hard Court’ Series.
Sonics beat Nets 73-69 in overtime when Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) inaugural tournament for 2015 continued in the Division I Category. The National Gymnasium is home to both Pepsi Sonics and Republic Bank Nets.
Shooting guard, Trevor Smith scored 23 points for Sonics with Kerwin Jackson adding 17 points and Junior Lovell 15 points. Forward, Mortimer Stewart scored 22 points, while Antwaun Austin continued his ascendancy at the guard position with 21 points for Nets.
Nets took an early lead in the first period, outscoring Sonics 21-13; the usually bigger Nets then maintained a firm grip on the first half of the game with a 38-30 advantage, despite both teams in the humdinger putting up 17 points before the halftime break.
Old habits returned like the plague for Nets in the third period, as they suffered an almost fateful meltdown; Sonics outscored them 19-8 to take a 49-46 lead before the last quarter; but thankfully Nets managed to forge some will in the last quarter that ended 61-61 that sent the colossal battle into overtime.
But it became obvious that the gas Nets expended get back into the contest, simply ran out since Sonics went on to outscore them over the next five minutes of overtime to take the win. It was a gigantic leap for Sonics, who were without star guard, Jason Squires, who was in Suriname on national duties.
In the other Division I game, Melanie Patriots defeated Eagles 58-51. Sherlon Legall scored 18 points while Ashton Adams had 10 points. For Eagles, Louis James scored 21 points while Mark Wills supported with 14 points.
Trinity Grid Holdings (TGH) Pacesetters defeated Ravens via walkover in the scheduled opening Under-23 game. (Edison Jefford)
