Councillors of the Region Ten RDC are asking the relevant authorities to investigate the type of bauxite exported by Rusal, the Russian Mining Company operating in Aroima.
According to APNU Councillor, Leslie Gonsalves, he was informed that Rusal is exporting bauxite as over burden and not passing it through the normal Laboratory system.
Another APNU Councillor, Charles Sampson, said that an investigation must be done. “Companies like Rusal are outsmarting Guyanese. No company is going to dig up ore and ship it out as over burden. If they are doing that then there is something in that ore that they know about. Russia is a highly developed country, just like China. It could be shipping out ore that has gold or rare earth minerals. Those are things you take very seriously. We need to know. You don’t export over burden. Something is in there that they don’t want people to know about and we have to take it very seriously.
“Rusal has been outsmarting Guyanese for years and the government is powerless to do anything.”
Councillor Sampson noted that Rusal is shipping high quality ore under the guise of low quality ore. He urged the Regional Chairman to get behind it. “Analysis has to be done of anything shipped out. If that is not done they are outsmarting Guyanese and they have the ability and the technical know how to do it, just like the Chinese.”
Councillor Gonsalves claimed that Rusal is very tight-lipped. “They have a way of doing things and they are at a stage where Rusal don’t want to meet with the union.”
He also noted that Rusal is not using the stipulated explosive in the mines. “Nobody knew; a lot of people are not aware that Rusal is using C4 (a plastic explosive) and not dynamite as the explosive in the mines.”
