A burglar who targeted an attorney’s office in Georgetown and carted off over $300,000 worth in items, has been sent to prison for three years.
Twenty-four-year-old Gary Kanhai raided the premises of Attorney-at-Law Emily Dodson at Thomas Street, Georgetown, sometime between last Saturday (October 11) and Sunday (October 12).
Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday heard that Kanhai loaded the items onto the wheelbarrow he took from the lawyer’s office and was arrested by public-spirited citizens who noticed his actions.
The man had with him two Dell computer systems, a toilet seat set, a stabilizer and web camera from the office – items which totaled to $373,000.
Kanhai appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and stated that though he was caught with the items, he had not broken into the lawyer’s office. He insisted that he was merely paid $500 by two other boys to transport the items.
“Is come out I come out to carry them things when they beat me up. The ambulance come and take me to the hospital. I did have the things, but I didn’t break into the place,” Kanhai, a resident of Thomas Street, South Cummingsburg explained.
“Your worship, I does fetch thing for people, that’s where I does make my money,” he pleaded.
Meanwhile, Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant reported that about 15:00 hours last Saturday the lawyer secured her office and went away. He said about 09:00 hours the following morning, Kanhai was seen transporting the items out of the compound.
Grant related that a group of public-spirited citizens held him and called the police, who then took him to the Alberttown Station where charges were laid. The Prosecution added that the articles were recovered.
The man said, however, that the police picked him up at a corner where he was being thrashed by a group of persons. Kanhai claimed that he was unconscious and had awoken at the hospital. He told the Court that a police officer came later that afternoon and picked him up from the hospital.
Amidst the accused man’s insistence that he did not break into the office, the Chief Magistrate instructed that the fact that he removed the items from the premises he could still be charged and convicted for the principal offence which was break and enter and larceny.
The court heard that Kanhai had been released from prison last February after being sentenced to serve time for a similar offence. He denied that and said at the time he “was in the bush.”
The Prosecutor added however that the accused, in fact, had been convicted twice before for larceny-related offences.
The Chief Magistrate, having considered all the factors involved, sentenced Kanhai to three years’ imprisonment. As he was leaving Kanhai begged “Your worship, your worship please…!” but she remained unmoved by his pleas.
