The Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) has extended congratulations to Leon Johnson, one of its most disciplined and hardworking cricketers, on his debut to Test cricket in the West Indies home series against Bangladesh.
In a release the DCB notes, “Of significance also is the fact that Leon’s debut coincides with the special 500th test milestone of the WICB and will always be a memorable one for us all.
Johnson became the 48th Test cricketer out of Guyana and has made a promising start to his career with two well constructed innings in his first match, 66 and 41 respectively. We are overjoyed by his performance and sincerely wish him many more such innings and better ones in the future.”
The release continued, “His selection doesn’t come as a surprise to us. After making his first-class debut nine years ago, Johnson has emerged to be the most dependable batsman in the longer version of the game for Guyana. His cricket has improved immensely over the last few years and he is ripe for cricket at the West Indies level.
We at the DCB are confident that he would be a vital player on the team in the years to come as he is a solid middle order batsman but also possesses the right temperament, technique, and skill to bat anywhere in the batting lineup.”
“For many Guyanese the most memorable series with Johnson for Guyana would be the Regional 4-Day last year where he stood out as the only Guyanese batsman to score heavily and consistently. After missing the first three games due to a knee injury, he came back and scored 110 against Leeward Islands, and finished as Guyana leading run scorer with 295 runs averaging 59.00. Leon was also awarded the GCB Male Cricketer of the year in 2013.
Johnson is a young, talented and smart player. We wish him a successful future as a cricketer and leader along with his other endeavours,” the DCB release concluded.
