– players go after Taffin Khan’s crown
The recent battle of wits to determine the national junior chess champion culminated with Haifeng Su avenging an earlier loss to Anthony Drayton to secure the honours. Now that that segment is done and dusted, the senior players are now getting ready to do battle for that crown held by incumbent, Taffin Khan, when the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) in collaboration with Caribbean Container Inc. presents the Senior Chess Championship Qualifiers at the Carifesta Sports Complex tomorrow morning.
The seven best players will advance to challenge Khan for his crown later this month when the trials conclude. In all, the players will battle over seven rounds with the first two rounds being contested tomorrow.
Round Three would be played on Wednesday November 13 at 17:30hrs at the same venue while rounds four and five are slated for Saturday November 16. The final two rounds are scheduled for Sunday November 17.
Each player would be allotted 90 minutes per game and the recording of moves would be compulsory. The registration fee is $800 for senior non-members of the GCF while members would pay a reduced fee. Cash prizes and medals would be awarded to the top seven finishers. Meanwhile, President of the GCF, Shiv Nandalall, visited the Farm Village, East Bank Demerara office of CCI Human Resources Manager, Jimmy Lorrimer, where the latter individual handed over a cheque of close to $60,000 to offset the expenses associated with the tournament.
The CCI Executive extended his best wishes to Mr. Nandalall even as he urged the players to be disciplined even though they are playing to win. The GCF President expressed deep gratitude while thanking Mr. Lorrimer for the prompt approval to their request.
