President of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Dave Cameron said at a press conference held yesterday at the Guyana National Stadium that the Regional Super 50 competition will be played separately from the 4 Day tournament in 2014.
Cameron was briefing the media of the decisions that came out a recently held West Indies Cricket Board meeting at the Le Meriden Pegasus Hotel in Georgetown.
He said that the board will discuss with the respective territorial government as to where the tournament will be played.
Cameron stated that regional cricket is facing a lot of challenges and a number of recommendations were made to improve the game in the Caribbean. “One such recommendation is bonus points for batting and bowling and not just winning the game,” he added.
Cameron informed that it was agreed to form a retired players committee. “It was decided to form a retired player’s foundation. We need to utilize our past players, this will be a separate foundation from the West Indies Cricket Board and jointly with the West Indies Players Association (WIPA),” added Cameron.
He also indicated that a Permanent Fund Committee will be shaped and it will be chaired by Conde’ Riley.
Anther body which will be fashioned is a Corporate Governance Committee. “The Government can play an important part in developing our cricket and we need their support. I must thank the Government of Guyana for their backing in the Guyana leg of this series and the Guyanese for turning out in their numbers.”
The WICB head also indicated that a new entity which will be known as a commercial entity will be set up. He stated that the board will support the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). “West Indies cricket will get stronger with the advent of the CPL,” he said.
Chief Executive officer of the WICB Michael Muirhead stated that International cricket has taken a new phase. “Just look out side, it is uplifting to see cricket is moving with the fans, we are looking at a significant amount of cricket in the next two years,” he pointed out.
Meanwhile Secretary of the Guyana Cricket Board Anand Sanasie affirmed that the people of Guyana are happy that international cricket has returned to Guyana. He said that the local board received full co-operation from all parties.
Corporate Communication Officer of the WICB, Imran Khan, informed that the Scotia Bank Kiddies and the Digicel Grassroots cricket have taken a new phase. He said that the board signed a new contract for four years for the Kiddies cricket and Scotia Bank is pleased with the progress it has made. “We are also looking to expand the Grassroots programme and it will be more effective. A lot of clubs have benefitted from the grants,” said Khan.
