Guyanese seeking to travel to Jamaica now have to be vaccinated against Yellow Fever, 10 days in advance. According to a travel advisory which was issued by the Jamaican Consulate here in Georgetown, persons coming from the following countries Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela need to be vaccinated.
The advisory said that the South East Regional Health Authority of the Kingston and St. Andrew Health Department in Jamaica has advised that in keeping with the International Health Regulations (IHR) of 2005, Jamaica now requires Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificates for all travelers coming from countries with the risk of yellow fever transmission.
It was noted that the World Health Organization (WHO) defines Yellow Fever as an acute viral hemorrhagic disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes. The “yellow” in the name refers to the jaundice that affects some patients when the virus attacks the liver. Yellow Fever can be prevented by a vaccine. The International Yellow Fever vaccination certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination and remains valid for 10 years.
All persons seeking to travel to Jamaica from Guyana are therefore required to show proof by way of an international vaccination certificate on arrival at the airport. Travelers are asked to contact their doctor or the nearest public health facility regarding the availability of the vaccine.
