The Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club (CSTC), the main promoters of the sport of Race Walking in Guyana has described 2011, despite the absence of adequate sponsorship, as an extremely good year for the sport and predicts 2012 to be equally successful.
Coordinator of the CSTC Olga Harry pointed out that 40 Race Walk events were successfully held including the first ever races at President’s College at Golden Grove and at Den Amstel in West Demerara, while the club was able to host its seventh Race Walk month of activities in August under the theme ‘unifying Guyana through Race Walking’.
The year also saw National Race Walk sensation Rudolph Mitchell achieve a phenomenal 117 local consecutive wins, while National female champion Donna Ramkissoon captured her 58th local title.
Miss Harry noted that the year 2011 also saw plenty of talent emerging in the junior category which augurs well for the future.
The CSTC Coordinator emphasized that her organization during 2012 will be working to ensure that Race Walking becomes one of the major sports in Guyana and the Caribbean with the assistance of a number of International Race Walking groups and Associations.
In Guyana, Race Walking is presently far down the list of prominent sports with approximately 150 persons contesting regularly countrywide but the CSTC will intensify its awareness and participation during the New Year with races and workshops in every corner of the 10 Regions Miss Harry opined.
Harry said Guyana is the centre of Race Walking in Caricom and feels confident that the sport will soon find its place on the local sports calendar of events.
She stated that Race Walking is not only a healthy and inexpensive sport, but is a virtual necessity because as we grow older we tend to become less active and need periods of exercise even more than before to stay healthy.
The Coordinator explained that the CSTC will be working strenuously to enhance the quality and quantity of competitions in 2012.
Harry lauded the input of the corporate community as well as other hardworking individuals whom she described as the catalyst to the achievements of the local race Walkers.
Among those coming in for praise was Dr Jose L. DaSilva, Manager of Modern Optical Service who assisted in every Race Walk event in 2011.
Dr Jennifer Webster, former Minister of Agriculture Robert Persaud GRA’s Kurshid Sattaur, Kaieteur News’s Mike Benjamin and Jermaine Carter of NCN were also among those commended for their contribution to the sport during 2011.
