The Guyana Police Force has started its preparations for the policing of this year’s General and Regional Elections.
The elections are scheduled to be held in another few months and according to Police Commissioner Henry Greene, the Force has already had presentations from the various Commanders on how they propose to deal with the period leading up to, during, and after the elections.
“We have already identified at least three squads (from the Tactical Services Unit) to deal with public order. We’ve a fourth squad from headquarters to deal with public order issues… basic like foot patrols and so on, on election afternoon and we’re gearing up for the meetings ,” Greene disclosed.
The Force had issued publications on training with regards to the control of public meetings which are expected to commence in earnest soon.
“All of those preparations we’ve made and we’re waiting now for the particular time when those rush of meetings will start. We’re ready,” Greene said.
It is expected that the Force will take lessons from the past when there was some amount of violence, although the last election in 2006 was violence-free.
Greene himself was at the helm of the force during that period and was widely praised for the work done by his ranks.
The Guyana Elections Commission has indicated that despite the reopening of the Claims and Objection period, it will be in a position to facilitate the holding of elections by November.
