McKay, Holder, Benjamin & Barrett are defending category champs
The marquee event for the Guyana Cycling Federation is set for this Sunday on the East Coast of Demerara and dubbed “National Road Championships” where senior, junior, veteran and female riders battle for the right to be called national champions of Guyana.
It’s the only full fledged event that is organised by the GCF apart from giving sanctioning for other Meets and the selection of teams to various Regional and International competitions.
All the top and emerging riders are eagerly looking forward to Sunday’s event which is expected to pedal off at 07:30hrs in front of the Ocean View International Hotel.
Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay will be there to defend the senior title as will female champ Hazina Barrett.
Mc Kay however, will find the going tough to be successful again with the likes of Alonzo Greaves, Robin Persaud, Darren Allen, Walter Grant-Stuart and Eric Sankar among the leading contenders for the title.
Junior champ Christopher Holder has not been in competitive mode for quite some months and has gained some weight. He started riding again two weeks ago and while he might compete, will not be in the pink of condition to retain the top spot.
The likes of Paul Nobrega, Kurt La Rose and Rawle Leal are some of the up and coming riders who will be challenging for the top spot in this category.
On the distaff side, Barrett will start as favourite to retain the crown but will be challenged by Naiomi Singh and Berbician Marica Dick.
The veteran champ, Berbician Gary Benjamin would not have been seen in competition for quite some time and while he has proved that he is good on his day, the likes of Kennard Lovell, Turhan Harris, Junior Niles and Raymond ‘Stealie’ Newton are expected to challenge for the trophy and bragging rights as the best in Guyana.
The race will start and finish at Ocean View International Hotel with the seniors pedaling all the way to the Abary Bridge before returning for what is anticipated to be an entertaining finish.
Junior competitors will turn back at Half Way Tree, while the veterans and females will turn back at the Mahaicony Bridge.
According to the GCF, all cyclists will ride through the Mahaica Old Road and return through the New Road.
Meanwhile, all cyclists are reminded that they must walk with their licenses along with their respective numbers failing which; they will not be allowed to compete.
JAGDEO’S HALF TRUTH!!!!
