The inclement weather has forced the organizers to put back the final and third place play-off of the Sherlon Hetemyer and Shaun Nurse Inter Secondary School Independence Anniversary Football tournament for schools in the New Amsterdam area to another date. Berbice High School (BHS) and Tutorial Academy Secondary School (TASS) have advance to the final with New Amsterdam Multilateral (NAMS) and Vryman’s s Erven Secondary School (VESS) slated to place for the third place.
The date has now been set for Thursday June 30.
The tournament, which is organized by the Hearts of Oak Masters Football Club, began on Monday June 13 and was played over a one week period at the All Saints Scott Church ground, Princess Elizabeth and Vryheid Road in New Amsterdam. The schools were divided into two groups with group ‘A’ comprising -Vryman’s Erven Secondary School (VESS), Tutorial Academy Secondary (TASS) and School of the Nations (SOTN). Group B was made up of Berbice High School (BHS), Berbice Educational Institute (BEI) and New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary (NAMS).
Results of the matches played were: on Monday VESS got the better of TASS by a 1-0 margin with Michel Vaughn scoring. In the second game, BHS through a Xavier Fraser goal and NAMS through a defence error played to a 1-1 draw.
On Tuesday VESS whipped SOTN 3-1 with Delroy Bullen 2 and Lloyd Freso 1 the goal scorers. Donald Dorway responded for SOTN. In the other game BHS through Calvin Andrews and Xavier Fraser beat BEI 2-0. On Wednesday TASS drubbed SOTN 6-0, the men on target were Ronaldo Austin 2, Shawn Hosannah 2, Cleroy Joseph and Ray Reddock 1 each, and in the final preliminary game NAMS whipped BEI 2-0 with Shakal Grant and Antonio Bhikam being the goal scorers.
In semifinal play; Group B runner up BHS upstaged Group A winner VESS 2-0 with Colvin Andrews netting the double. The other semifinal was a thriller with Group B winner TASS edging past Group A runner NAMS on penalty kicks 3-2 after the game ended 1-1 after full and extra time. Scoring for TASS was Cleroy Joseph while Antonio Bihkam responded for NAMS.
The winning and runner up teams will be presented with trophies and other prizes, while outstanding individual players will also be presented with tokens of appreciation. Each participating school will also receive a football. Neil ‘Grizzly’ Humphrey is the coordinator.
