Two men who the police had detained during their successful drug raid in the mining town of Linden last Wednesday, appeared on Friday before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court charged with possession of firearm and ammunition, and possession of narcotics.
The duo, Delroy Mannie of Lilbale, Pomeroon and Kevin Williams of Lot 17 Vryhied’s Lust, East Coast Demerara, both pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The allegation brought against them is that on June 8, at Millie’s Hideout, Linden, they had in their possession an unlicensed 12 gauge Mossberg shotgun with five live matching rounds and 4,062 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
According to Police Prosecutor Venetta Pindar, police were responding to a report of threatening behaviour and saw both Mannie and Williams lying in a hammock at the camp site. The ranks then conducted a search and found the 12-gauge Mossberg shotgun and ammunition. Further investigations led to the discovery of several bags containing leaves, seed and stems suspected to be cannabis.
Pindar then told the court that the duo was subsequently arrested and taken to the police station where the cannabis was weighed in their presence and amounted to 4,062 grams. The two men were then charged with the offences.
The prosecution objected to bail.
The youngsters who stood on dock making eye contact with each other were remanded to prison and their matter was transferred to Christianburg Magistrate’s Court. They were ordered to make their next court appearance on June 14.
