Relatives of a West Bank Demerara man are calling on the police in the district to conduct a thorough investigation into his death. On May 8 last, 56 year-old Solomon Kristraj Somwaru was pronounced dead on arrival at the West Demerara Regional Hospital.
It is reported that the man was found lying on the Bagotsville Public Road at around 11:00 hours with several visible marks about his body. This newspaper was told that that the man was on his way to La Grange to visit a sister.
According to a relative, one of the man’s nephews was heading to the La Grange Police Station to deal with a matter when he noticed a large crowd on the road. Upon checking to see what the crowd was looking at the man discovered that it was his uncle lying on the road.
The visibly injured man was picked up and rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. A post mortem has since revealed that Somwaru died as a result of a punctured lung and had several broken ribs. There was also a vehicle tyre mark on the man’s shirt.
However, to date there has been no arrest since according to the doctor’s report, following the post mortem, Somwaru’s injuries were consistent with a vehicular accident. This publication was told that no one in the area has since come forward to say if they had witnessed the accident.
Meanwhile, a source close to the investigation has since revealed that Somwaru was a victim of a motor vehicular accident and that the driver fled the scene immediately after the accident without rendering assistance.
According to the source, from all appearances, Somwaru may have fallen on the road and was run over by the vehicle. The source speculated that the vehicle which ran over Somwaru may have been reversing at the time or made a u-turn on the road when it ran over the man.
This newspaper was further told that the man’s injuries were not consistent with being struck down but suggested that he was lying on the road. Reports are that the victim may have been intoxicated.
In the meantime, the dead man’s relatives are calling on members of the public to come forward with any information which may lead to the arrest of the errant driver.
