Police have detained an ex-employee of the Correia Mining Company as they continue to probe last Monday morning’s brazen raid at the Ogle Airport, which resulted in the death of 55-year-old security guard Solomon Burke.
Kaieteur News understands that the ex-employee was detained some time yesterday, after police received certain information.
According to a source, the man who was fired from the company in early January this year, was recently seen acting in a suspicious manner near the compound where Monday’s attack occurred.
Around 04:30 hours on Monday, four gunmen stormed the offices of the Correia Mining Company, which also operates the Trans Guyana Airways, and shot dead Burke before carting off four firearms and cash in what was described as a well organised military-style operation.
Burke of 27 Vigilance, East Coast Demerara, and a driver attached to the Correia Security Services, was at the time taking a nap in the company’s minibus when he was attacked.
From all appearances he was ambushed by the bandits who had entered the facility from the unguarded rear and who shot him at close range to the heart.
Investigators believe that Burke might have recognised one of the attackers, hence the decision to kill him.
According to police, the gunmen escaped with two Remington 12-gauge shotguns and 37 cartridges, two .32 Taurus pistols and matching rounds, and four bulletproof vests, all belonging to the company.
This newspaper understands that they were subsequently able to recover a bulletproof vest and a camouflage hat which they strongly believe were left behind by the bandits as they fled via the Ogle Airport runway.
Meanwhile, investigators are still trying to enhance the images obtained from surveillance cameras situated around the facility.
“The place is still sterile and we are working on the images,” Divisional Commander Gavin Primo told Kaieteur News yesterday.
He did indicate on Monday that the images did not allow for the proper identification of the suspects, but from what was observed, the men operated with military precision.
Investigators are convinced that whoever committed the act was familiar with the location, since according to reports the lights were switched off, limiting the visibility by camera.
