A Guyanese man, on the run for the murder of an infant on Tuesday, has hanged himself, Suriname police say.
His lifeless body was found hanging from a rope in a barn in Santo Boma on Wednesday. This is according to police spokesperson, Marita Asontoe-Ritfeld, in a comment to Star Nieuws.
Persons who discovered Lante Johnson’s body called police.
Johnson reportedly went on the run from police after throwing gasoline and setting his lover and her child alight.
The child, Wiresh Dihal, succumbed to the severe burns at the Intensive Care Unit of the University Hospital on Tuesday night, according to the Star Nieuws.
The newspaper reported that the child was in the arms of his mother when his stepfather threw the gasoline. He then set them afire. The child sustained severe burns to his face, abdomen and back. Every effort was made in the hospital to save his life, but to no avail.
The newspaper said that the man suspected his lover of infidelity and decided he wanted to take revenge in this way.
Meanwhile, the police investigation shows that Johnson’s stepfather was the father of the baby. He had a relationship with the grandmother of the child. The mother of the child had no significant injuries. She was allowed home after treatment.
