Lawlessness and uncouth behaviour bordering on the barbaric, is how a group of vocal Wismar residents have described the behaviour pattern of several Drainage and Irrigation workers, who work the wards of this community.
One group that reportedly engages in particularly offensive behavior is the “Poker Street gang “according to a resident of the area Harold Hutson.
“These people are in the streets cursing— using the vilest language, from as early as 6 o’clock in the mornings. This is very disturbing to residents; but these people seem to have no respect for anyone,” Hutson reported.
The man said that some of the workers even ‘get violent’ sometimes and threaten each other with cutlasses- running each other down the street.
Hutson said that he made several reports to the police, and even spoke with a Government official, but the lawlessness continues—”is like these people are a law unto themselves, they do as they please.”
Several other D&I groups are also guilty of this type of behaviour, according to Hutson, but the gang in Poker street seems to be the worst.
Other residents who chose not to be identified, said that the behaviour of the D&I workers is totally disrespectful, and as adults they are not setting any proper example to the young people in the community.
Residents are calling for strict monitoring of these D&I groups, and have suggested that if necessary strict disciplinary action should be taken against those guilty of engaging in distasteful and violent behaviour.
It was acknowledged by a few residents that while the workers do a good job of keeping the drains and parapets in the community clean, the atrocious behavior generally displayed by many is totally unacceptable, and residents will no longer put up with this.
