Krishna Singh was yesterday sentenced by (ag) Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry for the offence of possession of marijuana and cocaine. He was unrepresented and pleaded guilty to the offence.
It is alleged that on December 3, at High Street, Georgetown, he had in his possession one gram of cocaine and three grams of marijuana.
Singh explained to the Magistrate that on the day in question, he was walking along High Street when he found the illegal drugs on the roadway. He added that a police officer who was nearby approached him and inquired “what you just pick up deh”.
After he revealed what he had in his possession, the officer arrested him.
Subsequent test carried out by investigating ranks found the substances to be cocaine and marijuana. As a result Singh was charged and brought before the court.
Amongst his plead for mercy he told the Magistrate that “it was not my own. I just found it.” Never the less, he will have to spend the next three years in the Camp Street jail and fined $30,000 for the charge of cocaine possession.
For the charge of possession of marijuana, Magistrate Beharry fined him $3,000 and six months of community service.
Also appearing before the same Magistrate was Michael Persaud who pleaded not guilty to simple larceny.
The accused who did not provide the court with his date of birth and home address was unrepresented.
The Prosecution’s case is that on November 28, at Light Street, Georgetown; Persaud allegedly stole one pair of fog-lamps off a vehicle owned by Mark Garnett.
The court was further told that Garnett saw when Persaud was performing the act and shouted at him, causing him to run away.
In court, bail was refused and the defendant was remanded.
The matter will be heard again on December 13.
