… Torture teen case
Attorney-at-Law Khemraj Ramjattan, in wake of the arrest warrant that was issued for his client, tortured teenager Twyon Thomas, said that he is of the view that his client may have been threatened or may have been paid off to not testify against the police ranks.
The state issued an arrest warrant for Thomas after he failed to show up in court to give evidence against Constable Mohanram Dolai and Sergeant Narine Lall.
Ramjattan, yesterday, said that the last time he spoke with his client he was assured that his client was willing to testify.
He said that, recently, he has been unable to make contact with the parents of the young man.
Ramjattan said that without the teen’s testimony the matter will be dismissed in favour of the two police ranks that were accused of setting fire to Thomas’s genital area.
As it relates to compensation, Ramjattan said that it will not have any bearing on that case because the teen has already entrusted him with the power to do what is necessary to seek compensation on his behalf.
Meanwhile a senior police source who is familiar with the matter has said that the family may have fled to the interior because they feel that the issue has become too political.
The matter involving the torture of Thomas and two others had attracted international attention and condemnation.
Amnesty International, a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognised human rights for all, is currently seeking global support for the teen who was tortured while in police custody, as well as Deonarine Raffi who has been charged with the murder of Ramenauth Bisram.
The international human rights body, in its plea, stated that Raffi may face an unfair trial after being tortured in order to force him to sign a confession.
The group is calling on persons worldwide to call for assurances that the evidence used to charge Deonarine Raffi with murder was not solely based on a confession obtained by torture; and that any legal proceedings he faces meet international fair trial standards; urge the authorities to ensure that Raffi receives immediate and regular access to all the medical treatment he needs.
The group is also seeking international support in calling for a full, prompt and impartial investigation into the allegations of torture and the circumstances surrounding the detention of Raffi, Nouravie Wilfred and the teenager, Thomas.
