Guyana is gearing to observe ‘Fire Prevention Week’ from Sunday amidst the spate of recent fires that has left hundreds of millions of dollars in damage as well as the numerous being made homeless.
As such the Fire Advisory Board (FAB) will be joining forces with fire departments across the country during the coming week to remind residents of the importance of fire safety.
“During this year’s fire safety campaign, the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) and the FAB will be spreading the word about the dangers and consequences of fires.”
It was pointed out that the importance of fire safety and its negative impact to lives and property must be recognised.
The increase in the number of fires around our country even was pointed out notwithstanding the marked improvement in the efficiency and performance of the GFS.
Fire Prevention Week this year will be observed under the theme: “Promoting Safer Community Through Active Participation In Fire Prevention.” The FAB said that they endorse and support the proposed week of activities being organised and coordinated by the GFS to raise awareness of fire prevention.
The FAB and the GFS will be participating in a series of activities including, “lets Gaff’ -a radio production, Guyana Today, and Fire And You on the National Communications Network.
There will also be an exhibition in front of Fogarty Building on Water Street, Robbstown to promote fire safety and prevention.
The FAB and the GFS said that they have identified a dire need within “our community to develop a more positive and proactive culture towards inculcating and adopting preventative measures to reduce the risk of fire and arson to the community…Fires put lives and homes at risk and have financial implications for our community.”
The two entities have been working together, and have developed a fire prevention strategy to help make the community safer by developing responses and implementing treatments to ensure the community is a safer place.
