The teenage mother who was detained last Thursday after her 8-month-old daughter’s decomposing corpse was found in a latrine has been released from police custody.
This newspaper was told that the woman was released on Monday evening last after the post mortem examination performed on her baby was undetermined.
A source close to the investigation said that the pathologist was unable to find the cause of death because of the advanced state of decomposition of the body.
Meanwhile, according to an expert, Guyana is not in a position to deal with such cases given its technological limitations. As it is now, there is not the requisite equipment in place to conduct advanced toxicology tests.
“We can do testing for some of the common pesticides, but the more advanced tests which include metal poisoning and testing for arsenic, cyanide and prescription drugs we cannot do,” an official told this newspaper. It was noted that it is very costly for the Government to send samples overseas for testing.
Meanwhile, despite the fact that the post mortem is undetermined, the police said they are currently seeking the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
On Thursday last, the teen mother was arrested after her baby was found in a latrine aback of her house at Parika Façade, East Bank Essequibo.
Reports are that the child was last seen alive on Sunday. When persons enquired from the mother about the baby, they were told that the child was left with a relative. However persistence and the suspicion of neighbours led them to the latrine where the baby was found.
