Short Message Service (SMS) will be the new means through which the Ministry of Agriculture’s Hydrometeorological Service will be ensuring that Guyanese are kept abreast with prevailing weather patterns. According to a statement issued last evening, the Ministry has been collaborating with the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) to ensure that Guyanese are informed of Hydrometeorological predictions using SMS.
This joint endeavour, according to the statement, will aid in further enhancing the Ministry’s notification process, with GT&T subscribers receiving regular early warning updates on the weather. This, the statement added, will allow for a higher level of efficiency in ensuring that citizens are kept abreast with weather, climate and water issues locally.
According to the statement, the Ministry of Agriculture appreciates the support from GT&T which joined forces with much enthusiasm to further reinforce Guyana’s early warning system.
It is hoped that by disseminating regular information and, where necessary, warnings to all users about hydrometeorology in Guyana, this will help various government agencies, Non-Governmental Organisations and the Guyanese people with emergency contingency planning and recovery if necessary, the statement added.
Stakeholders interested in continuous updates are asked to visit the website of the Hydrometeorological Service (www.hydromet.gov.gy).
