Georgetown Floodlights edged East Coast Floodlights team by a thrilling five-wicket margin on Friday evening at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground Bourda in their specially held fund-raising 25-over softball match.
After the contest, the Floodlights Association boys accumulated $210,000 which will go towards offsetting Seema Ganesh’s expense, a teenage girl from Enmore, East Coast Demerara, who will be travelling to Canada for an operation of a dislocated spine.
The visitors batted first and scored a challenging 168-9 at the expiration of the 25 overs, while Georgetown, in reply, struggled to 169-5 in the final over with skipper and opener Derick Ramotar leading the way with 45.
He got good contributions from the veteran Wayne Jones and Ramesh Sunich with 23 not out and 21 respectively as Rohan Boojraj grabbed three wickets for 18 runs from his allotted five overs.
Earlier, Captain Bedi Ramjewan scored a rapid 28 to see East Coast got to their total, while Sheik Mohamed supported with 19. Ramchand Ragbeer snatched 3-23 off five overs, and Mike Singh 2-29 off five overs.
Several trophies were presented to the winning team, man-of-the-match Ramotar, and other outstanding individual performances, compliments of Sir Deoraj Nauth, Lakeram Ganesh and Trophy Stall of Bourda Market and City Mall.
Meanwhile, the match was organized by former national cricketer Sheik Mohamed along with Guyana Floodlights Softball Association representative Jailall Deodass. The family of Seema also attended the game, and expressed their gratitude to the floodlights players for making the contribution which will go a far way towards the operation.
