Police are questioning several persons at Tamakay, Middle Mazaruni, in connection with the death of a 30-year-old man who was chopped and beaten to death while allegedly stealing gold from a mining camp.
Reports from the area indicate that the victim, identified as Mervin Andrews, was killed by irate miners on Thursday after he was caught red-handed raiding a sluice box.
A police official told Kaieteur News that it is still unclear whether the slain man was working in the camp.
The mother of the slain man contacted police yesterday and gave them his name.
Police have had to investigate several murders in different parts of the interior in recent months.
At least four murder suspects are still to be apprehended.
