Food For The Poor (Guyana) Inc., with transportation assistance from the Ministry of Public Works and Communication, on Friday last, donated $12M worth of items to victims of the devastating Mahdia fire that left scores of residents homeless.
The fire which erupted on the evening of Thursday July 1, accounted for the total annihilation of approximately 25 buildings/businesses, leaving about 150 residents homeless; and many residents and business people of the “Mining Town” in abject hopelessness.
According to Food For The Poor (Guyana) Inc, Executive Director Leon Davis, after immediately receiving a call concerning the disaster that had befallen Mahdia, the organization “answered the call by mobilising a team of staffers to expeditiously conduct a needs assessment and stacked two lorries, full of relevant items.”
The contribution the non-profit organisation made to the relief efforts, (not necessarily in the quantity or amount provided) included food Items: Chick Peas, Coffee Instant Mix, Flavoured Tea, Protein Potatoes Meal, Protein Rice Meal, Canned Vegetarian Beans, Garden Beans, Canned Food, Cereal, Tea Soda, Buonamice Pears and Tomatoes, Assorted Crackers, Juice, Hot Sauce, Pencils , Water, Medical Supply, Head-to-Toe Baby Wash, text books, Clothing, Baby Food .
“The organisation is willing to be of continued assistance, should the need arise. Minister Robeson Benn and the Ministry of Public Works and Communication deserve much commendation for the provision of transport, without which, these items could not reach the victims,” Davis stated.
