…crime/corruption is Achilles heel of administration-CADRES
The recent poll conducted by the Caribbean Research and Development Services concludes that a large cross section of Guyanese believe that the ruling administration the People’s Progress Party Civic has the superior ability to grow the nation’s economy.
According to another report to the media by Peter Wickham of CADRES, the entity asked respondents to identify the national issue of greatest concern to them and in that instance, 43 per cent of Guyanese are most concerned about the cost of living.
The opposition parties have been carping on the issue for several years now as well as the issue of employment which 13 per cent of respondents identified as a main concern
“These data are similar to other CADRES surveys conducted across the Caribbean which reflect a preoccupation with issues of an economic nature primarily.”
He said that in Guyana the single largest group of respondents that identified a non-economic issue was concerned about crime. “However there is no comparable data available which allows us to determine if any individual issue is of greater concern now than a year or two ago.”
It was pointed out, also, that in addition to the major issue of concern, respondents were asked what they thought was the PPP/C government’s major strength and weakness and in this instance people believed that the government’s major strength is their ability to enhance the infrastructure of Guyana, “and this view is shared by persons who support all political parties.”
The poll found that the PPPC’s major weakness “is less obvious, however, and respondents were split between its inability to tackle corruption, fight crime and create employment.”
He posited that the proximity of the crime and corruption issues would imply that this is the Achilles’ heel (deadly weakness despite overall strength) of the PPPC Government.
Wickham stated that CADRES asked respondents a specific question about the extent to which they believed that civil society and Guyanese in general should have more of a say in the day to day decision making of the country and it was generally agreed that people should have more of a say (83 per cent).
He said that there was, however, less cohesion regarding the party that was more likely to give people more of a say, but the majority (25 per cent) were of the opinion that the AFC would be most likely to provide this space for participation of Civil Society and Guyanese in general.
The poll revealed that almost equal numbers of people, 17 per cent and 18 per cent, felt that the PPPC and the PNCR respectively would be more inclined to empower people in this way.
CADRES is expected to reveal the result of their poll as it relates to leadership in Guyana.
