Joseph Persaud, an octogenarian of 337 Savage Street, North East La Penitence, was seriously injured when he fell into a manhole on Wellington Street early yesterday morning.
A devout Catholic who sells the Catholic Standard for a living, Mr. Persaud was on his way to the office to collect his daily supply of newspapers when tragedy struck.
Someone had removed the cover from the manhole and Mr. Persaud; quite unaware of this, mistakenly stepped into it. He suffered a broken left leg and lacerations to the right side of his face.
Two passersby assisted the senior citizen out of his predicament and then transported him to St Joseph Mercy Hospital, Parade Street, Kingston. However, in the absence of an orthopedic specialist, Persaud was referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital for further evaluation.
He decided to return to his North East La Penitence home and it was only after he complained of severe pains that his daughter decided to summon an ambulance which arrived soon after and transported him to the hospital where he remains.
