Kevin Maloney, the Kitty resident who was shot in the right shoulder on Friday, is refuting reports that
he was wounded while attacking a policeman with a knife.
He is claiming that he was unarmed, had no drugs, and was accidentally shot by a policeman who was brandishing his firearm.
Police had alleged that the 27-year-old Maloney of William Street, Kitty, was wounded while resisting arrest for drug possession.
According to the police, ranks on a mobile patrol observed Maloney acting suspiciously at around 23:00 hrs and during a search of his person unearthed a quantity of cannabis.
He made a dash and was pursued by a rank who caught up with him in a yard. The police said that Maloney pulled a knife from his boot and menacingly attacked the rank resulting in him being shot.
Speaking to Kaieteur News while handcuffed to his hospital bed, Maloney said that he was in the yard of his Kitty residence, when three policemen in a vehicle arrived.
Other residents were also standing outside and Maloney said that one of the ranks, who carried a rifle, ‘cranked’ his weapon and told them not to move.
Maloney claimed that he became concerned for his safety because of the manner in which the rank was cocking his firearm and decided to move out of range.
But he alleged that before he could move, the policeman fired, hitting him in the right shoulder.
According to Maloney, the policeman came over to him and said, “Youth man, look you bleeding.”
“I say ‘you shoot me’.”
He said that the ranks then transported him to the GPHC. They subsequently handcuffed him to the bed.
Kaieteur News understands that Maloney has another matter pending in court. The wounded man said he was charged with unlawful possession of arms and ammunition.
