Next Saturday, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is hoping to spawn a “wellness revolution”. The second annual Caribbean Wellness Day will be the catalyst.
Aimed at stemming the tide of the many non-communicable diseases (NCDs) affecting and afflicting the peoples of the region, on Thursday last, many plans for this year’s observance were announced to be activated in at least 16 Caribbean countries.
Assistant Secretary-General, Human and Social Development, CARICOM Secretariat, Dr. Edward Greene told regional media operatives that the implications of unabated Non Communicable Diseases are far-reaching, touching facets of regional economies, health and social sectors.
Hence, the implementation of the actionable recommendations for the prevention of NCDs outlined in the Declaration of Port of Spain is critical to reduce the incidences of NCDs in the Region.
The main emphasis of the activities leading up to the second annual Wellness Day is to inculcate the values of wellness to hopefully begin a “wellness revolution,” Dr Greene said.
At the CARICOM Secretariat, it was announced that several countries have indicated their preparedness for the September 12 observance.
Dr Greene emphasised that there is a need for a “working together” among countries to ensure that the wellness strategies are adopted throughout the Caribbean. He added that there is also need for “a sustainable set of programmes” that would see every day being “wellness day”.
The Assistant Secretary-General lauded the promotion support efforts of the Pan American Health Organisation and commended the work of the regional Ministries of Health for the national strategies employed to encourage a culture of wellness in their particular Member States. “We have an obligation to take responsibility for our good health,” he declared.
He urged the regional gathering to “be conscious of the refrain of the Nassau Declaration of 2001 that the Health of the Region is the Wealth of the Region.”
Consultant on Chronic Disease Prevention Control within CARICOM, Dr. Alafia Samuels, in her presentation at the launch categorically stated that Caribbean Wellness Day is not a one-off occasion but a day she hopes will “stimulate ongoing activities for wellness in the Region”.
