An eight year-old boy was the surprise star when a Spelling Bee competition, organised by the Yarrowkabra Community Policing Group Youth Arm, commenced yesterday.
When the first round of the contest began, the diminutive Scott Figueira refused to compete in the junior (eight to eleven years) category, and insisted that he be allowed to compete with the seniors (13 to 16 years).
“He said that the words for the juniors were too easy,” one of the organisers told Kaieteur News.
Scott proved that he could compete with the “big boys” by qualifying for the semi finals of the contest.
In all, Scott and three other seniors are in the semi-finals, while five in the junior category are also through to the semi-finals.
The Yarrowkabra Community Policing Group Youth Arm was formed in April. Its motto is “Striving for perfection with unity.”
The group has identified a large plot of land in the community for sports activities.
