Scores of Sarah Johanna residents are peeved at what they called a high handed approach to a land dispute in the locale. This dispute is already before the Courts.
Yesterday, a crew of construction workers commenced the clearing of a path for what is said to be a roadway. In the process they damaged property and utility services, according to the affected residents.
The residents said that while some of them have transports for their lands, others began squatting ever since the 1980s. They said that in early 2008, the man showed up claiming to own the entire Sarah Johanna gardens area.
He is said to want to construct a housing scheme in the area and is even advertising the ploy on television. The residents are adamant that after the squatting intensified, moves were made to regularise the area. There was a survey and utilities have been put in place as is evident by the presence of Guyana Power and Light poles. There has also been the installation of water mains by the Guyana Water Incorporated.
The man who claims to own the land rarely goes into the area but sends crews that insist that they are only working on instructions and they are said to employ enforcers to ensure that their work is carried.
