The Guyana Defence Force on Thursday presented the outgoing Brazilian Military Attaché, Colonel Eudes Carvallho Dos Santos, with the Military Efficiency Medal (MEM).
The presentation was made at a farewell luncheon in his honor last Thursday at the Officer’s Mess at Base Camp Ayanganna.
The award represents an appreciation of the Colonel’s service of a high quality in facilitating a high and sustained level of interaction between the Armed Forces of the Federative Republic of Brazil (FRBAF) and the Armed Forces of the Republic of Guyana.
It is granted to individuals who have rendered valuable service beyond the normal call of duty to the GDF and to those who have contributed to the strengthening of the Army’s bilateral ties with other armies.
The citation for the conferring of the Award notes that Colonel Dos Santos, on assuming command as Military Attaché, not only continued the work that was being done, but expanded and strengthened all areas of cooperation between the Armed Forces of the two countries.
Commodore Gary Best lauded the work done by Colonel Dos Santos and congratulated him, noting that he truly deserved the National Award.
He pointed out that the profile of bilateral relations between the two military establishments and the governments and peoples of the two countries had been greatly enhanced as a result of Colonel Dos Santos’ input.
He remarked that, although Colonel Dos Santos was departing, there would not be a departure from all that was built during his sojourn here.
The Commodore wished the high ranking Brazilian military officer well in his future undertakings, and said that the GDF looked forward to working closely with his designate Colonel Antonio Liete Dos Santos, to further broaden and strengthen the relationship between the GDF and the FRBAF.
In response, Colonel Dos Santos expressed heartfelt thanks to the government and people of Guyana, and the GDF for honoring him with the MEM.
He said that it was indeed a joy to have worked with the GDF and to have witnessed the strengthening of the bonds between the two militaries.
Colonel Dos Santos demits office on March 31, 2009.
He has held the office as the Brazilian Military Attaché for the last two years, beginning March 2007.
His designate, Colonel Antonio Liete Dos Santos will assume duties as Brazilian Military Attaché on April 1.
