‘Reds’ Perreira took Guyana to the three Central Americans Basketball Championships
Guyana first major attendance at International basketball was back in 1971 at the Central American Basketball Championship in Caracas, Venezuela.
Guyana, who were managed by president of the then Guyana Amateur Basketball Association Joseph ‘Reds’ Perreira, lost to host Venezuela 96 to 77, lost to El Salvador 75 to 68, lost to Cuba 123 to 46 and to Puerto Rico 75 to 51, but defeated Trinidad and Tobago 72 to 51.
The National Team for that historical event was: Ronald Pickering (Captain), Michael Brusche, Winston Joseph, Howard Caesar, Melroy Fitzalbert, Mice Wiltshire, Walter Chin, Frederick Clarke, Hewley Henry (Player/Coach), Joseph ‘Reds’ Perreira (Manager).
Guyana again with ‘Reds’ at the helm participated at the Central American Championship, this time the host country was Puerto Rico 1973. Results: Guyana lost to Mexico 130 to 64; Michael Brusche 12 points, Hewley Henry 10 points, Abdullah Muesa 13 points, Gavin Kendall 9 points.
Lost to Panama 124 to 54; lost to Puerto Rico 129 to 62 – Michael Brusche 23 points.
Lost to Venezuela 75 to 67; Michael Brusche 20 points.
Lost to Cuba – 88 to 32; Michael Brusche 8 points, Philip Daniels 8 points.
Lost to Dominican Republic 84 to 61.
Lost to US Virgin Islands 81 to 75; Michael Brusche 16 points, Howard Caesar 16 points, Melroy Fitzalbert 11 points.

The last time the national team played at the Central American Basketball Championship was 1975 in Dominican Republic.
Results: They lost to El Salvador, Venezuela, Suriname, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic but defeated Haiti.
The team was: Michael Brusche (Captain), Melroy Fitzalbert, Compton Hinds, Aubrey Chalmers, Phillip Daniels, Clifton Brusche, James Devonish, Ron Pickering, Keith Hinds, Brian Gonsalves, Winston Joseph, Merton Fitzalbert, Eldon Vaughn (Coach).
Michael Brusche, Melroy Fitzalbert, Ronald Pickering and Winston Joseph had the honour of playing in all three tournaments.
Guyana men never played, at the Central American Basketball Championship after 1975, although they qualified as a result of placing second at the 1994 Caricom Championship in Guyana, they did not attend because of a lack of funding.
Anyhow, Guyana ladies under the stewardship of Karen Abrams attended the 1997 Central American Championship in Honduras.
Before the 1971 Central American Championship in Venezuela playing under the Union Jack, July of 1965, the Land of Many Waters were outclassed in a three match series against the highly touted America Amateur Athletic Union Basketball team which comprised the following players: Rodney Hoist (Colorado), James Meyers (Virginia), Dean Church (Arkansas), Leon Clements, Jim Brovelli, Verne Benson (California), Calvin Fowler (Colorado), Gene Summers (Michigan), Lee Lamos (California), John Lewis (Manager), Bill Vining (Coach), Bruce Benner (Referee).
Game one at Queens College auditorium; U.S Team won (96 points) to British Guiana (48 points). Game two; U.S team won (74 points) to British Guiana (43 points); Charles Torani Clements scored 10 points for British Guiana. Game three; U.S team won (80 points) to British Guiana (31 points), Charles Torani Clements 10 points, Hewley Henry 9 points and Eldon Vaughn 5 points.
The British Guiana team for the series was: Chin St. Hill (Captain), Hewley Henry, Michael Brusche, Charles Torani Clements, Wally Murray, Eldon Vaughn, Raymond Goulding, Ronald Pickering, Ken Barrow, Speedy Franklyn, Compton Nicholson, Deryck Spence.
