Surajnarine Singh, the 20-year-old convict who escaped from the Camp Street Prison in Georgetown a week ago, was recaptured yesterday at his Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara home.
Acting on information, police cordoned off Singh’s home at around 18:45 hrs.
Kaieteur News understands that, as some of the ranks entered the front gate, Singh spotted them and fled via the backyard.
However, he ran straight into the arms of one of the policemen who had surrounded the premises.
Eyewitnesses said that the fugitive and family members began to plead with the policemen to spare his life.
He was subsequently detained at the Sparendaam Police Station.
Singh, who was serving a five-year sentence for armed robbery, slipped away from his prison guards two Thursdays ago while he and other inmates were fetching lumber into the prison.
Prison staffers were unaware that he was missing until evening, when the number of prisoners was being tallied during ‘lockdown.’
Director of Prisons, Dale Erskine, has vowed to take disciplinary action against the ranks who caused the security lapse.
