– Singh
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), Karan Singh has said that many Guyanese continue to waste water, despite efforts made by the water company pleading with the public to conserve water.
“Wastage, wastage, wastage… we have to deal with that every single day of our working life at GWI,” Singh said at his recent press conference.
He cited the recent incident at the West Demerara Hospital, where some nurses had protested that the hospital was not receiving any water and as such blamed GWI.
According to Singh, the hospital failed to check their internal plumbing, which he noted had major leaks in the yard that resulted in the spillage of the water, and consequently the water could not have reached the tanks.
“We had to go and fix the hospital plumbing to make sure we show them that this is their problem; we at GWI ourselves are partly responsible because sometimes when you wait on tender board to give you the order to get the fittings, they don’t come on time. We can’t repair the leaks on time and then the customers get frustrated because they think we are not acting on their complaint and we don’t have enough resources to go and say, ok, it is the fittings we don’t have. We don’t say that fast enough to the customers. Because we ourselves are also embarrassed,” Singh explained.
The CEO also noted that the water company is in dire need for the collaboration of the Guyana Power and Light Company (GPL) in order to provide a better service to the consumers. They don’t care; they don’t see the relationship between GWI and GPL. We are at the mercy of GPL. I am not condemning GPL,” Singh said.
He explained if there is a power outage as a result of GPL, then GWI would not be able to provide water to the people, since the water company cannot afford to have generators at all their locations.
On Thursday, we had a shutdown on the East Coast of Demerara…we don’t have generators at each and every location. If this was the case then we would have to get over 150 generators at a capacity that can pull water from 900 feet below the ground,” Singh noted.
According to the CEO, Guyanese are very indisciplined with respect to the usage of water. He urged for everyone to work collaboratively with the water company in order to improve the service.
