Vice-President of the Guyana-Cuba Friendship Association (GCFA), Zaida Joaquin, has described yesterday’s meeting with Minister of Public Service, Dr Jennifer Westford, as fruitless.
Joaquin told this newspaper that the ministry can assist the parents only if they get a chartered flight from Barbados to bring the students to Guyana.
More than 210 students, who are studying at the San Dino University in Cuba, were slated to return to Guyana for the August holidays at the expense of their parents, but it was noted that the travel agency informed the parents that it would no longer be able to fly the students directly to Guyana.
The Vice-President told Kaieteur News that the parents have already paid approximately $158,000 to the Jim Bacchus Travel Agency, which had initially agreed to fly the students to Guyana, but then informed the parents that the agency would only be able to bring the students up to Barbados.
The students were scheduled to return to Guyana on Monday last, but the parents stopped the travel agency from bringing them, since their children would have been stranded in Barbados, as no flights would be available to fly them to Guyana.
As it is right now, the parents have not been refunded their money from the agency. Kaieteur News understands that some of the parents are trying to book individual flights for their children, in order to get them back in Guyana.
The concerned adults and guardians are now frustrated, since they cannot get any other agency to fly their children back home, because most of these agencies are fully booked as a result of CARIFESTA X.
Efforts to contact the relevant authorities at the Jim Bacchus Travel Agency proved futile. This reporter was told that no one was available to give a comment on the matter.
