Dear Editor,
The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Robert Persaud, is spending US$181 million in the Berbice sugar estates, according to an article in SN on July 20, 2008 (“Minister urges cooperation”).
I hope that some of the money will be spent on improving the living conditions of the sugar workers in the Berbice communities, and not to re-introduce the logie slave-like conditions which I am quite familiar with.
But judging from the Government’s history of marginalization, I doubt that they will do the right thing. The villages of Sandvoort, Ithaca and Fyrish, where the majority of Afro-Guyanese cane harvesters live, are in deplorable condition.
The roads are not accessible, garbage collection, education and health facilities do not exist for the residents, yet these people labour and produce for GuySuCo to make hefty profits so that the managers of GUYSUCO can live in Pradoville.
The Government encourages the people of these depressed communities to gyrate for CARIFESTA X while they are starving. This is exploitation of workers. Frustration and hopelessness prevail among the residents.
It reminds me of a Roman Emperor who fiddled while his city burned. Occasionally, a few workers are gathered and presented with music and worthless certificates, and after that propaganda and deception, they are unable to feed themselves and families. Finally, wake up, Guyanese, and stop the exploitation.
